{"id":8927,"date":"2026-06-17T18:49:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T16:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tonmeister.ca\/wordpress\/?p=8927"},"modified":"2026-06-17T18:49:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T16:49:30","slug":"pet-peeves-of-a-pedant-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tonmeister.ca\/wordpress\/2026\/06\/17\/pet-peeves-of-a-pedant-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Pet Peeves of a Pedant: #3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday, I <em>once again <\/em>read something on the Internet by someone saying something like &#8220;of course, as you know, high frequency sound travels faster than low frequencies&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not true for any practical purposes within the limits of human hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The speed of sound in air, in m\/s is approximately<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">331.67 + 0.607*Temperature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, at 20\u00b0C, the speed of sound is just under 344 m\/s. I normally say 345 m\/s, partly because 22\u00b0C is a good guess, and it&#8217;s easier to type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any dependency on frequency is measurable, but should not be considered to be perceivable &#8211; and is certainly not worth laying awake at night, worrying about it.
