Two-channel Stereo

A two-channel playback system (typically misnamed ``stereo'') has a standard configuration. Both loudspeakers should be equidistant from the listener and at angles of -30$^\circ $ and 30$^\circ $ where 0$^\circ $ is directly forward of the listener. This means that the listener and the two loudspeakers form the points of an equilateral triangle as shown in Figure 10.26, producing a loudspeaker aperture of 60$^\circ $.

Figure 10.26: Recommended loudspeaker configuration for 2-channel stereo listening.

Note that, for all discussions in this book, all positive angles are assumed to be on the right of centre forward, and all negative angles are assumed to be left of centre forward.
